About the Writer's Page: This area was created as a support mechanism for a writer's group that began after a writing workshop called Further Empowered by the Pen, taught by Tom Peek in Volcano, on the big island of Hawaii. Though it was initially created to support a relatively small writer's group, we feel that every writer should have access to the same tools, prompts and feedback that is possible in a face to face group meeting. We will be adding more information and features to the area as time goes on, so check back and see what we have from time to time. If you'd like to make a comment, or request something we haven't implemented yet, fell free to send an email to writers@talapa.com . Much of the content from Tom's workshop involves working with concepts from Natalie Goldeberg's books, primarily Wild Mind -- Living the Writer's Life. Some of the rules detailed in Wild Mind are:
Writing is a practice and as the name indicates, practice helps make writing come easier. Often it is easier to get moving by using external prompts or triggers. As an exercise, click on one of the following links, which will cause a small window to appear with a word or phrase, then write whatever comes to mind as a result of the trigger. Write for at least ten minutes if you can. If you seem to stop or hit a wall, re-read the trigger and continue with whatever comes, even if it doesn't make any sense at the time. If you wish, you can click on the link again to get a different trigger. Click here to get a single word trigger to write about. Click here to get a phrase to write about. Note for users with MS Internet Explorer: Your browser may not refresh the pop up window properly. If you want a new trigger, you may need to close the existing small window before clicking the link a second time. Soon, pictures and sound files will be added as additional triggers. Booklist: From time to time, we find books that we feel are of value to aspiring writers. The Writer's Page Booklist provides links to some books we find useful. |
